NPCC DRILLS

SECTION 1 – THEORY

INTRODUCTION

“Why is drills needed?”

1.     Teamwork

An individual effort does not bring survival or victory for the individual. The individual has to learn teamwork and the values of unified and co-operative action so thoroughly that they guide his later actions instinctively. Teamwork in any uniform group can be built on the Parade Square. Here, all personnel learn that there can be no orderly movement of men or units without a precise and unified effort, and that every man has to play his part.

2.     Discipline

Discipline is founded on drill. Drill has often been used as a forerunner to great battles, and during them it justified itself. When victory is won, a parade, in whatever place, will most quickly restore the corporate unity of any body of men. When drill is taught or practiced, those in command must stress its object.

However, it must be noted that drill must never be used as a punishment but always as a means of raising standards within a body of men

TIMING

When a drill is first taught to a squad, the whole squad should be made to call out a common timing loudly and clearly.

This is for two reasons:

1.     Every member has the timing for the drill fixed in his head.
2.     The squad learns to act together.

Qualities of a good timer

1.     CLARITY & VOLUME
The squad should be able to hear the timer’s voice loudly and clearly regardless of the size of the squad. It is practical to situate the timer in the middle of a squad or have two timers situated at each end of a large squad.

2.     CONSTANCY
The timer must give constant timing according to the required time, pace and regulation pause. Inconsistent timing will only serve to confuse the squad.

3.     SHARPNESS
Just as good commands leads to good drill, sharp and accurate timing will allow the squad to perform better drill.

NOTE: Never drag the timing for marching

WORK IS STILL IN PROGRESS TO UPDATE THE SECTIONS BELOW

SECTION 1 – THEORY

WORDS OF COMMAND

All words of command must be clear and forceful since the way in which they are given affects the reaction, which they inspired. A word if command is divided into 3 parts:

3.     Introductory
This tells the squad what movement they are about to carry out.
E.g.      "MOVE TO THE RIGHT IN THREE"
"Bergreak ka-kanan bertiga -tiga…"

4.     Cautionary
The drawn-out and loud reminder to the squad.
E.g.      "RIGHT"
"Ka-kanan, Pu…"

5.     Executionary
The loud, sharp command.
E.g. "TURN"
"Sing!"

Timing of Words of Command

The cautionary word of command should be consistently drawn out over about the equivalent of four paces in quick time. There should be a pause between it and the executive words of command of:

a)     At the Halt               :           the regulation pause.
b)    In Quick Time          :           about four paces.
c)     In the Slow Time      :           about three paces.

SECTION 3 – Marching (Practical)

CHANGING STEP IN QUICK TIME

Command

TUKAR LANGKAH MASA BERJALAN TU – KAR
(Change step on the march)
Drill Movement
¨    Given as the right heel strikes the ground. (can be executed if command lands on either leg)
¨    Take a pace of 30 inches (75 centimeters) with the left foot, and freeze with the left foot flat on the ground, the right heel raised, the right arm swing forward and the left arm fully to the rear.
¨    “Bend the right knee” so that the instep of the right foot is behind, touching the heel of the left foot.
¨    Return the arms to the position of attention.
¨    Now combine the movements.
Common Faults
¨    Not returning the arms to the sides in the second movement.
Timing
CHECK!

SECTION 1 – METHOD OF INSTRUCTIONS (MOI)

RECOMMENDED GUIDE for MOI

1.     Introduction
Introduce the command that will be taught.

2.     Formation of Squad
To be effective in transferring knowledge of drill, the IC should bear in mind two factors on the formation of squad

·   The comfort of the squad
Minimize the chance of then facing the sun, under shade if necessary, etc.

·   Deploy them in the formation in which they will learn fastest.

Guide to formation:
Straight--------------------------- Footdrills
Semi-circle----------------------- Rifle drills (practice)
Three ranks---------------------- Open order Saluting at halt
Break into smaller groups

3.     Explanation
Explain what you are about to teach and its importance.

4.     Demonstration
Break into 3 components:
1.     Complete demonstration, shouting out the words of command.
2.     Demonstration by number, pointing out important details.
3.     Another complete demonstration

5.     Practice
After each demonstration by numbers, practice the squad in that movement checking their faults.
Finally after demonstrating the whole movement, practice the squad, judging the time.

Note: Allow a Q&A session with the cadets.

QUALITIES OF AN INSTRUCTOR

Drill is exacting. To teach successfully, you must possess the following qualities:

1.     Patience : Never lose your temper

2.     Enthusiasm : You must install your sound with a will to learn

3.     Consistency : Set a standard for both yourself and the squad, and do not deviate from it

4.     Humanity : Understand the squad's problems. Praise when necessary and never humiliate individual members of the squad.

5.     Personality : As a Drill Instructor, you must impress your squad with your personality and always control them fully.
